THE EXAMINER EDITORIAL OPINION

31/05/2018 Posted by admin

First it was two dogs. Now the West Tamar Council is shooting the messenger – namely The Examiner. Every time The Examiner has reported on developments in this story it has gone back to the (West Tamar) council for a response. We have put the facts on the record, not the hearsay or rumours. We’d welcome the council doing the same if it maintains there are “gaps” that are relevant. – FIONA REYNOLDS, editor EDITORIAL: Page 22

Tassie visitor numbers up despite the gloom

31/05/2018 Posted by admin

NEARLY 900,000 people visited Tasmania in the 12 months to March, an increase of 7 per cent over the previous year, according to the latest Tourism Tasmania figures.Convention and conference visitors increased by 22 per cent while total visitor nights were up 4 per cent, to 7.45 million nights, and total spending in Tasmania growing by 7 per cent to $1.43 billion.”Tasmania was continuing to defy the national trend of a weakening domestic travel environment by posting a third consecutive quarter of positive visitor growth,” Tourism Minister Michelle O’Byrne said in a media statement. She said the Tasmanian Visitor Survey results for the year ending March showed overall visitation to Tasmania of 896,800 people, an increase of 7 per cent compared to March last year.Growth was strongest in the number of interstate holiday visitors to the State.”In the year to March 2009, we welcomed 14 per cent more holiday visitors to Tasmania than the previous year.”This is even more impressive when you consider that the year ending March 2009 did not include the Easter holiday period, unlike the same period the previous year.”Once again this is fantastic news for Tasmania and our tourism industry which has consistently shown it is in a very strong position to weather the challenges of the global market conditions.”Ms O’Bryne said the results showed Tasmania was continuing to outperform its State and Territory counterparts and further supported anecdotal evidence from the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania and tourism operators that it was a bumper start to the year.Interstate overnight travel at the national level declined in the year to March 2009 according to the National Visitor Survey (NVS) results released today.Nationally, interstate visitor nights fell by 10 per cent, overnight trips declined by 6 per cent, and overnight spend dropped by 10 per cent. The TVS is a destination survey providing a detailed picture of visitors to Tasmania and is conducted through interviews and a self-completion questionnaire of targeted passengers as they depart Tasmanian ports. It has a sample size of around 9000 interstate visitors per year.Detailed information on the Tasmanian Visitor Survey for the quarter ending and year ending March 2009 can be found at www.tourismtasmania南京夜网.au

Judy Moran’s house badly damaged by suspicious fire

31/05/2018 Posted by admin

Judy Moran’s home in Moonee Ponds was damaged by a fire last night. Photo: Penny StephensAS Melbourne crime matriarch Judy Moran spent the night in the cells her house was badly damaged by a suspicious blaze. The front of Mrs Moran’s house was engulfed in flames just hours after she was remanded in custody charged with being an accessory after the fact in the murder of her brother-in-law Desmond “Tuppence” Moran.Metropolitan Fire Brigade western zone commander Bob Undy says damage to the house has been estimated at $150,000.Arson squad investigators will determine whether an accelerant or a Molotov cocktail was used to start the fire, which appeared to take hold in the front living room of the house.Police officers this morning could be seen closely examining the home’s living room window frames and the ground beneath them.Detective Sergeant Glen Warren, from the Arson Squad, told reporters this morning arson chemists had arrived, but it could take some time to determine how the fire began.Asked if there was a connection to the shooting of Des Moran, Detective Sergeant Warren said: “Anybody could speculate. It would be an obvious thing to follow up”.He appealed for any witnesses who may have seen something suspicious in Ormond Road last night to contact CrimeStoppers.A police spokeswoman said police had already conducted a brief search of the property on Monday night after Des Moran’s murder.A second search was conducted yesterday after police obtained a search warrant, and objects of significant to the police investigation were removed.A neighbouring family escaped injury when windows exploded.Maria Manifavas was in her daughter’s bedroom in her Ascot Vale unit when she heard a huge bang and explosion, then a sound like fire crackers going off, when the fire started about 11pm.”I’m still shaking, just because my daughter’s here, my brother came over, and my daughter heard it, but she’s okay.” Ms Manifavas said. She said the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes but it was “very big”.”I shut all my windows to stop the smoke from coming inside, there was so much smoke,” she said.Ms Manifavas’ daughter’s bedroom is just metres from one of the windows that exploded in Mrs Moran’s house.Ms Manifavas said she did not know whose house it was until she heard it on the news on Wednesday morning.Coincidentally, Ms Manifavas went to the Union Road cafe where Desmond Moran was shot just one hour after the killing on Monday.”It’s a good deli, I go there a bit. I’ve been a bit shaken since then really, this is all a bit of a shock,” she said.Police remain on guard at Mrs Moran’s home in Ormond Road in Moonee Ponds.
