Humpback whales targeted

LISBON – Plans to resume the hunting of humpback whales, protected by a moratorium introduced more than 40 years ago, came under fire from environmentalists yesterday. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society said Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, intended to ask a summit on Monday for permission to hunt 50 humpbacks over five years. “Denmark is lobbying intensely, with the support of Sweden, to build a European consensus in favour of Greenland’s proposal,” society spokesman Nicolas Entrup said.
